Blackjack offers smart gamblers the best chance to win real money on a consistent basis and creates a meaningful gambling bankroll. That’s because it has the lowest house advantage of any casino game-- only about a 0.5 percent advantage on average. Optimal blackjack strategy can shift the house advantage into winning odds in the player’s favor.

Whether it’s blackjack online or traditional casino blackjack, the house has a built-in advantage by making players draw or stand first. That means the dealer could win without even turning the hold card—assuming the player busts first.

However, this advantage is small, and the right rules can whittle it down to next to nothing. When you add in coupons, comps, and free blackjack bonuses, you can actually gain a winning advantage over the casino in some cases. And if you learn to count cards, you can reliably beat the online game even without any of those bonuses.

Its exceptionally low house edge makes online blackjack a nearly even proposition whenever you play. And when you add some skilled card playing and a bit of luck, you could win a large sum of real money.

How to Play Online Blackjack

Unfortunately, too many players make the mistake of thinking they have to get as close to 21 as possible—that’s not the goal of the game. The goal of the game is simply to beat the dealer, which is often accomplished by causing them to bust.

Instead of trying to hit 21, smart players simply focus on beating the dealer’s hand. If the dealer is showing a low card face up on the initial deal, they will likely have to draw more cards until exceeding 16 points or going bust.

You start by getting dealt two cards, and if you have a card worth 10 points (face cards) face up and a low card in the hold, the dealer will have to assume you have at least 10 points with your card that’s face down. That means the dealer will have to take at least one more card. If that is the case, they stand a good chance of going bust.

Such simple gaming tactics—when used correctly and accompanied with some timely luck—can help reduce the already small house advantage and virtually wipe it out during your next card game.

Knowing When to Hit or Stand

The dealer deals one card face up to each player, from left to right, with the last card — which is face down (hole card) — going to the house’s hand. The dealer will then deal an additional card facing up to each player and then to themselves.

After the initial deal, the blackjack rules (and number of decks) indicate that the dealer will ask each player, in succession, if he/she needs one or additional cards. As the player, you can ask for one or more cards—called a “hit”—until you either go over 21, or you think you have the best possible hand.

Once you’ve gotten to your limit, you “stay” or “stand”—letting the dealer know that you don’t want any more cards. Each successive player then decides whether to hit or stand.

After all the players have completed their hands or gone bust, the dealer reveals his or her down card (first card dealt). Depending on the dealer’s cards, the rules at the table will dictate whether the dealer hits or not.

Once the dealer’s final hand is established, all players who did not go bust compare their scores to the dealer’s hand. Those who beat the dealer win, while the rest lose—unless they tied, which is called a “push.”

A push is considered “no action,” and refunds the player’s bet. Some popular casinos, though, might declare a push to be either a loss or a win for the player. The casino’s twenty-one rules should say exactly how they handle such ties with players.

A Blackjack Hand Example

The dealer deals you a 4 and a 5, which gives you a total of 9 (4+5). The dealer’s face-up card is a 6. In this case, you decide to Hit and you’re given a King. Your total is now 19 (4+5+10) and you decide to Stand.

The dealer is now required to draw cards and they must draw more cards to any total of 16 or less and must stand on any total of 17 or more.

In this example, the dealer turns over their second card and reveals a Queen. The dealer’s total is now 16 (6+10) and in this case, the dealer must draw again. The third card is a King and so the dealer has a Bust – that is, their card total has exceeded 21 (6+10+10=26).

You will win the hand and will be paid out 1:1. That is, if you bet $100, you will receive your $100 bet back plus an additional $100.

Different Types of Blackjack

Most players are aware of the traditional card game as well as the various versions of 21, but many do not realize there are multiple variations (European blackjack is one) available at different casinos.

Online casinos, in particular, like to create new and exciting varieties of traditional card games. That’s because they don’t have the space restrictions that land-based casinos have.

Without having to worry about limited physical space for table games, online casinos can cater to individual player wagering preferences to a greater degree than land-based casinos are able to.

Among the many different varieties of blackjack are Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Spanish 21, and Hi-Lo. There are also some other less popular versions that have different blackjack rules and payoff potentials and quite a few blackjack table games now incorporate side bets to spice things up.

Mobile casinos make it easy to find and play a variety of different blackjack games so that you can choose the ones that best fit your playing style and strategies.

Whether it’s splitting cards, doubling down your original bet, buying insurance, surrendering or other advanced plays, there are right and wrong times to try certain plays.

The more you study, practice and learn the advanced plays of blackjack 21 and other games, the more you can reduce the house advantage against you.

Knowing the right time to split cards, for example, takes a great deal of practice to master. You must assess your hand, know mathematical blackjack odds, assess the dealer’s hand, and consider the potential of making two winning hands instead of just one.

The same goes for doubling down your bets and other advanced plays. Although blackjack is a relatively simple game on the surface, those who take the time to learn and master it will find themselves winning much more often.

Can You Count Cards in Online Blackjack?

Virtually all table games players have heard of the concept of card-counting while playing blackjack.

The idea is to determine when the deck has a favorable balance of cards left in it after several hands have been played and you have a strong hand.

Card counting is legal, but virtually all casinos ban players they deem to be “advantage” players. An advantage player is an especially skilled one who can determine the best times to lay wagers and typically wins more often than the average or even against more skilled players.

Casinos try to thwart card counters through various means, including multiple decks of cards and tracking betting patterns.

Card counting systems and techniques adapt to changing times, however, so many players are still making money from VIP blackjack players today.

Many games online still offer single-deck free blackjack games, which makes blackjack card counting easier to do for skilled players who have studied and mastered the concept. This helps you practice blackjack online while perfecting this particular skill.

Live Dealer Blackjack

When you play live blackjack online, you get the benefit of visually enhanced games with excellent sound and graphics.

You also have the option of playing with live dealers, against the computer (live casino), with multiple players or just start playing against the house at your own table.

This is accomplished through video streaming. You’ll see and hear the dealer, but you and the other players won’t be able to see or hear each other.
